It has been the hottest weekend of the year and we of course chose to spend it having a girls weekend in Chicago. We drove in Friday night after I got out of work and went to stay with Aunt Barb and Uncle Joe. You slept for a while but woke up as we approached the skyway and all of the lights and stop and go traffic and were looking at everything. As we approached the city and could see the skyline I was so excited to be going into Chicago with my little girl. I described the buildings to you and found myself thinking ahead to what will hopefully be many years of girls weekends in Chicago, a city that I love to visit and explore. This weekend you and I went to Chicago because your daddy and Aunt Kris were going to Lollapalooza in Chicago and I figured that if they were going to be there we might as well go have fun instead of staying home. We made plans to spend some time with Sarah Holtschlag as well as going to see Chrissy, David and Ceci's new house. We were able to stay at Aunt Barb and Uncle Joe's house even though they were out of town for the weekend.
Saturday morning we went to pick up Sarah and then the three of us took the metra downtown where we met up with daddy, Aunt Kris and Nick Fratarolli for breakfast. Nick has lived in Chicago for a little over a year now and is trying as many restaurants as possible (meaning he goes to new restaurants every time he goes out to eat - one of the many things we love about Nick!) We headed to West Egg Cafe where we had a really fun breakfast in a 'private room'. The restaurant appears to have expanded and is in two suites in the same building and we were in the expanded part of the restaurant which looks like it was probably an office before and has a wall of 'private' tables that are in what would have been offices. It was a fun way to eat although my favorite part of the meal was that we were with Sarah, Nick and Kris. I'm sure you know but Sarah was my maid of honor, Nick was your daddy's best man and Kris was another one of my attendants. It really meant a lot to me to share time with all of them because we are all doing such different things and don't get to spend time together very often.

After we ate we wandered around for a little while as a group and then you, Sarah and I went off on our own. We didn't have any concrete plans as we started the day and ended up deciding to do an architectural cruise of Chicago which was a 90 minute guided tour on the river describing the architecture and building of the city. In theory this was a great idea - it was hot and the breeze would feel good and there would be a lot of things to look at. However, we all know that great ideas don't always work out and this was a prime example of that. I hadn't thought about how many people would be on the boat and we ended up sitting towards the middle of the boat which meant you couldn't really see a lot. After 20-30 minutes of trying to entertain you I took you downstairs on the boat to change your diaper and give you a break and found that there was a lot more room down there so we moved there for the rest of the tour. This still didn't solve the problem of you not quite being entertained but this was solved by "Lucy" a guide dog who was on the cruise with her owner. As soon as you spotted the dog you were entranced and didn't want to do anything else. Thankfully she was a service dog that you could pet (I told you no at first but her owner invited you to pet her) and we spent the rest of the tour sitting by her so that you could pet her and be entertained. We followed the cruise with dinner and then it was time to take Sarah home and put you to bed!
This morning we went over to see Chrissy, David and Ceci's new house and go to breakfast with them. You and Ceci played much better than you did in the past and I think it will get better every time you play together. Today there was a lot more sharing and you actually played together rather than just playing in the same place. Hopefully they'll come up here sometime in the next few months so that you can see each other again before Chrissy has the new baby (an other girl due in December)
So many amazing things happened this weekend and I wish I could record every one of them; because I can't do that I hope that we have many more weekends like this.
